After pregnancy, weight loss, or age, breasts tend to lose volume and become more prone to drooping (ptosis). If you are considering breast surgery for this reason, you may be confused about whether you need a breast augmentation, a breast lift, or a combination of both procedures. The answer must be determined on a case-by-case basis.

If the amount of breast drooping/sagging is relatively mild, breast implants alone are usually enough to correct the problem. A breast augmentation is also the best option if you are looking to increase the size of your breasts by at least a cup size.

A breast lift alone is usually the better option when breast ptosis is more severe (e.g. if you look at your breasts straight on and there is no visible skin under the areola; this is considered moderate-to-severe ptosis). Additionally, if you are already a C or D cup size and don’t want to be any larger, you should opt for a breast lift by itself.

However, there are circumstances when it is best to combine breast implants with a breast lift for the best results. This combination is ideal if you:

  • Have severe drooping
  • Want to be larger in addition to lifting your breasts
  • Want to maintain the roundness and projection of your breasts
