One of the most common breast augmentation questions is how long breast implants last. In truth, there is no easy answer to this question. Some women’s breast implants last longer than 20 years, while other women may require implant replacement in only a few years.

While there is no real answer to this question, Miami plastic surgeon Dr. Jon Harrell offers our patients the latest, most effective breast implant options. We cannot guarantee that your implants will last forever, but we take every care to help ensure they last as long as possible. Please call (954) 526-0066 with questions.

What Is a Breast Implant Rupture?

The manufacturers of breast implants hold that these devices are not intended to last for a lifetime. Despite this, for many women, they do. However, one possible breast augmentation complication is implant rupture.

Implant rupture may be caused by trauma. It may also be caused by severe cases of capsular contracture or by the simple acts of wear and tear. Saline implant rupture tends to be immediately noticeable as your breast will simply deflate. Saline is non-toxic, and ruptured saline implants are not a cause for medical alarm. They will however necessitate the removal and replacement of your implant.

Silicone ruptures are harder to detect. Some symptoms indicating a silicone rupture include:

  • Pain, soreness, or swelling in the breast
  • Changes in breast size or shape
  • Changes in the softness or hardness of a breast
  • Lumps in the breast

With silent silicone ruptures, neither you nor Dr. Harrell may notice the problem without diagnostic tools such as an MRI. It is recommended that women with silicone implants have an MRI every two to three years to help guard against undetected ruptures.

As with saline ruptures, a ruptured silicone implant will need to be removed and replaced to help continue a symmetrical and full appearance.
